How we cultivate

Prasmo Agri is directly involved in seaweed cultivation along the shallow coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, working closely with over 1,000 fisher families. This initiative not only ensures a steady supply of raw material but also supports livelihoods in coastal communities.

Seaweed is cultivated using controlled farming methods in natural marine environments. Depending on seasonal and regional conditions, we follow structured practices to ensure healthy growth, consistency, and sustainability.

Seaweed Varieties

We work with multiple marine algae species, each offering unique functional and nutritional properties across industries.

Red Algae

Used for carrageenan extraction, red algae forms the core of our operations. Species like Kappaphycus alvarezii and Eucheuma are cultivated for their strong gelling, thickening, and stabilizing properties across food, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications.

Brown Algae

Brown algae are rich in bioactive compounds that support soil health and agricultural productivity. Varieties such as Sargassum and Turbinaria are processed into inputs that improve plant growth, nutrient uptake, and overall crop resilience.

Green Algae

Green algae are used in select applications where nutritional and environmental benefits are key. Species like Ulva (sea lettuce) are valued for their role in sustainable solutions, including soil conditioning and specialty formulations.

Why this matters

Seaweed cultivation is one of the most sustainable forms of marine farming. It requires no freshwater, no fertilizers, and helps improve marine ecosystems by absorbing excess nutrients.

At the same time, it creates stable income opportunities for coastal communities, making it both environmentally and economically impactful.
